Johannes Larsen was born in Kerteminde, Denmark. Larsen married Alhed Maria Warberg in 1898, and the couple built their home in Kerteminde, which became the gathering place for many painters in summertime. Then, businessman Mads Rasmussen gave the group a financial boost with his Faaborg Museum and they were able to paint in Italy.

Larsen was celebrated for his bird paintings, especially his woodcuts and smaller pieces, as well as works for public buildings like Christiansborg Castle and Odense City Hall.
